In a nutshell, yes. Stock Windows has become even more useless over the years, and installation has obviously become a pain in the ass. I don’t envy our IT department.

Many Linii (and even BSDeez and various Archaeums) are more “download to a USB stick and use” now, you don’t even need to install them!
Just today and yesterday, one of my friends asked me to upgrade their windows server for their small business.
Installing a fucking windows took me 6 hours. This whole shit would be done in 40min I if I could install and setup Debian on their server.
Ran into this shit yesterday trying to set up a laptop for someone where I had no internet access.
Imagine having everything ready to go on a USB drive and you can’t get past the second screen unless you find WiFi.
At least this command still works, but damn.

If you use Rufus you can create the USB that automatically bypasses the Internet requirements. Still annoying af though.
Video games have gone this way too. Pop in disc or cartridge, go to play, forced to download updates that fix what was shipped in a broken state.
I just don’t plug in the Ethernet cable or connect to a wifi network. There will be a skip option if you aren’t connected but it will pester you about how great it is to receive ads. Then once you actually get to the finished install you will have 30 days to setup an account and register otherwise you will get the little note in the bottom of the desktop that says you’re using an unregistered version and get pop ups to remind you to register.
You don’t have to connect it to the internet and register, it just annoys you until you do.
They removed the option. Even if you boot with WiFi off. So now you have to open CMD and run the command OOBE\BYPASSNRO reboot and it’ll give you the option to skip. Had to look that one up cause yeah it used to be just boot w/o Ethernet plugged in

As someone pointed out below, Rufus does have a feature now that lets you check a box to do this automatically.
If the argument is that windows sucks because you have to do a bunch of bullshit to get it semi functional, then the same could be said for something like arch Linux with its setup process and the constant tweaking.
Windows is for people with no self-respect. Seeing them defend it is just sad in the same way as seeing a battered spouse defend their abuser.
And memes like this and statements like these just feel like some pointless superiority complex circlejerk which achieve nothing to actually promote Linux adoption (or rather hurt it).
I like Linux, I’ve been using Linux on all of my desktop systems for a few months now and on various servers for many years. It’s nice. A lot of things are great. But there are just as many hiccups to encounter. And the kind of superior, unhelpful attitude that a noticable part of the Linux communities show (whether that is just a vocal minority or actual major part is irrelevant to someone looking for help), especially towards new users who often have no idea about various Linux-isms, is really shitty.
But there are just as many hiccups to encounter.
We’re not talking about "hiccups; " we’re talking about deliberate attacks against you. Linux has bugs, but with Windows, the OS is designed to serve Microsoft’s interests at your expense. It’s a categorically different thing.
Your statement is a perfect example of the sort of bargaining (in the toxic relationship sense) I’m talking about. It’s the tech equivalent of saying “I fell down the stairs” when the real cause of your black eye was your abuser punching you in the face.

Note that absolutely nothing I’ve written here is about technical competency or “Linux-isms,” but instead about psychology and business ethics.
First point, fair. I’m not arguing that. I despise Microsoft as much as the next person here. I honestly don’t have strong feelings about Windows at its core, I’ve used it extensively, but I also always knew how to work around Microsofts bullshit, whatever. Doesn’t make the paractices any less predatory. Fair.
Second point, I in no way defended Microsoft and/or Windows. I only talked about Linux there. That’s quite some interpretation, equating that to defending an abuser in a toxic relationship.
And third point, yeah, “Windows is for people with no self-respect” totally sounds like psychology and business ethics. Just what is the point of such a statement? It is hardly the average users fault that Windows has the market share it has and that Microsoft has the power it has. Or that its shitty practices are allowed in the first place. Call it lazy or complacent or “no self-respect” or whatever you want that most users just accept it, unless there are alternatives that work for the majority, people are getting educated about them (and the problems with how things are otherwise) and the community actually helps with issues in good faith at large, I don’t expect things to change drastically. Which is what I was trying to get at, but I certainly could have explained that significantly better. And we desperately need regulatory changes to restrict and prevent such predatory behavior in the first place.
I’ll try to do the educating and helping part in my immediate surroundings, anyone I can get to try Linux (or other alternatives in other categories) is good in my book. Instead of telling my friends and family they have no self respect.
And before you read that into this, I am not talking about people who actively defend Microsofts shitty practices. I am talking about people who just use it because that’s what was on the device when they got it. And created an account during setup simply because it asked for it, without giving it a second thought (since that sadly has become commonplace, which, again, I am not defending). And I assume that is the vast majority.
It sounds a lot more like you are the one categorically not respecting people who use Windows, as opposed them having no self respect. Blanket statements like that help noone.
Maybe I’m stupid here, maybe I’m misreading your comment, whatever, tell me if I’m wrong. I currently don’t feel like putting more energy into this discussion, if you can call it that, but I’ll see.

I’ve done installs of linux where the fact the internet connection was shit slowed it down. why is the fucking ·iso 4gb if it still needs shit from the internet?
Who says you have to install Linux? Just run it directly on a USB drive to be extra flexible!
