According to police, Marvin repeatedly blocked the robot’s path and ignored multiple commands from officers to move.

She was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct.

Can standing in a public space legally be enforced as “disorderly conduct?”

If she kept moving to be in front of it, it’s not just standing there as you’re framing it.

She wasn’t charged with disorderly conduct for standing. She was charged with it for repeatedly moving and for ignoring officers’ commands to stop moving.

If she did that to you while you are trying to get to your office for an important meeting, how would you feel about her actions? If the robot did that to you, how upset would you be?

If some guys were raping a woman, the cops would not have shown up at all

If she really has issues with robotics, why not do it through protestion and legislation than harassing random robots on the street.

Yeah cuz it’s so much easier to accomplish things via sign holding and appealing to elected people that have their pockets padded by the delivery robots you want banned. /s

Sidewalks are for humans. Mechanical transports already have the streets. Big companies have taken way too much away from us already. Law enforcement enforcement of corporate “robots” on the sidewalk over humans is just more moving the bar away from us. Fuck this and fuck your calling someone standing up against taking what little we have left away from us harassment.

Wheelchairs especially powered ones, children on bicycles, people pushing carts, people using hand trucks, people with rolling luggage etc would all be banned from sidewalks then.

I agree with this woman’s cause but she is just a crazy Philly woman. If you really wanted to stop these things just kick them over and run, as it looked like she just stood in front of the bot and waited for the cops. Even better get a big ass truck drive up next to these bots scoop them up and then you got free lunch and a robot collection.

The robots have tons of cameras, sensors, and tracking equipment. You would be caught very quickly if you were just trying to vandalize them

If you wanted to go that route, pretend to be on your phone and trip over it in such a way as to knock it over

If you have the resources, you can tack on a personal injury lawsuit

I think it’s fair that she gets sued. Whether the arrest was really necessary I don’t know. You wouldn’t stand in front of a train or a truck and expect not getting legal problems with that. You are disrupting traffic and a legal and civil business.

If her point is, according to the article, to protest “corporations that displace human delivery workers in order to enrich their own bottom line”, I fully understand her, even if I am not convinced of her method.

Robots are awesome cool tech that could make everybody’s lifes better. But their increasing deployment must come with legal and societal guardrails. Especially, we need to develop societies worldwide such that they are prepared and have solutions for the disruption of low-skilled labour markets.

Delivery robots are just the beginning. This will continue and progressively creep up the labour skill levels.

I would love to see a world where nobody has to work, because it is no longer necessary. But jobs become increasingly ineffective as the primary wealth distribution system. Robots and AI do not pair well with present capitalistic societies. This demands fundamental systematic changes in socio-economic structures.
