Built when Netflix first took away password sharing. Thanks for the heads up Netflix! Would not want to start this project now 😂

Edit: adding temp and specs

    I am guessing the egg-shell foamed enclosure is for the sound, but you probably have a bunch of sound coming from the fan port, nessisary for ventilation. You can cut a lot of the sound but maintain the airflow by cutting an s-shaped ducting spanning the width of the enclosure. The shape will drop the sound, while then ducting keeps the air flowing. I would not recommend any sorts of filters to block the sound because they are a bit too restrictive for an enclosure in your style.

      I get about the same affect by placing a layer of the foam on the wall behind the fans. But you’re totally right. Without that lil bit the fan noise from the intake and exhaust was a lil noticeable

        Also high density mass loaded vinyl works better for your enclosure. Foam helps against reflections but they still let sound trough. Mass loaded vinyl basically adds mass to the walls of your enclosure which stops them from transferring the sound waves to the outside.

          Does it help to point out this is vinyl backed foam 😉 really thin vinyl sheet on it, but it helps

    For those worried about temps. The cpu never goes past the 80s when being ran hard, and drive temps are comfortably in the 40s

      Oh, and if anyone is curious on specs. This is my old gaming rig but it’s: I9 11900k Z590I Vision D ITX mobo 64gb memory The 16x lane is bifurcated to run: Intel a310 & Lsi 9305 16e into a hp dl380

        Super quiet, and had been running non stop for over a year no with no problems 😊 also that i9 runs super hot. When it was in my lil gaming rig it was always running up near 90. So retiring to the server had been much more gentle on it, lol

            It just had a very undersized cooler at the time (pics of case are hiding here somewhere lol). It would idle normally, but load put it near throttle. Moved to the 9800x3d though in the same case and that performs like a dream

      Was just what I was experimenting with when I built it a few years ago. Never gave may issues so I’ve just stayed with it. Would be nice to be able to mismatch my drive size though

      Yea, I definitely would have gone z2, but this all started with the drives, and slowly expanded into this monster. But so far it’s been running smooth. The drives were added at different times to so they shouldn’t fail at the same time (hopefully 😂)

        Haha fair enough. Fixing it after the fact basically requires a second server of equal or greater storage. I fear a rebuild on my 16tb disks.

        Hey, I’ve been upgrading the same freenas (now trunas) for 15 years. I need 40tb of space to redo the raid lmao. It’s striped and mirrored, so I’m losing 18tb. It is what it is for now, works great for my files and Plex.

      The whole setup is really quiet actually! The cabinet has an intake fan hiding on the bottom, while the top fan is just exhaust. Then all the fans in the system are built for front to top exhaust. I posted temps while the system is running full tilt of you were curious

    Oi. I had mine in my hall closet, looks a lot like yours, including the Noctua cooler and stack of hard drives. In spite of adding a vent to the top of the closet door, and a big gap at the floor it still got too hot. I ended up moving it to the spare bedroom.

      You gotta do push pull. There’s another fan on the bottom of the cabinet pulling in fresh, while all the hot air is directed up and out. Temps are more stable then my gaming rig sitting 5 feet away in the open air.

    thanks for sharing, nicely done, would love a video or dB reading. noise wise, my rack doesn’t get too bad running mini-itx boards and quadro p2200s; my gaming rig, on the other hand, could benefit from this. SFF case with a deshrouded rx 6650 xt and 80mm server fans from arctic (max 8000rpm). it sounds like a jet engine spinning up when i play anything, despite the 3000rpm limit i put in fan control.

    aside, would you mind sharing your av1 settings? i currently pass everything through ffmpeg to mkv in an attempt to save space with my plex library

      Here’s my tdarr flow. I have redundent paths to handle if qsv fails and to retry in software if you’re curious of why it splits

      Also, here’s my lil gaming rig too. Runs warm, but it’s tiny.

      It’s a 9800x3d paired with a 6800xt

        thanks for sharing, i was hoping for more specifics to experiment with; i have a powershell script i’m running that does the same thing:

            try {
                ffmpeg -y -hwaccel nvdec -i "$input" `
                    -map 0:v? -map 0:a? -map 0:s? `
                    -c:v h264_nvenc -preset slow -rc vbr -cq 21 -b:v 0 `
                    -pix_fmt yuv420p `
                    -c:a aac -b:a 160k `
                    @subtitleArgs `
                    "$temp"

                if ($LASTEXITCODE -eq 0 -and (Test-Path $temp)) {
                    $encoded = $true
                }
                else {
                    throw "GPU encode failed"
                }
            }
            catch {
                Write-Warning "GPU failed -> CPU fallback"
                Add-Content $logFile "GPU failed, CPU fallback: $input"
                $gpuFallbackCount++

                ffmpeg -y -i "$input" `
                    -map 0:v? -map 0:a? -map 0:s? `
                    -c:v libx264 -preset slow -crf 20 `
                    -pix_fmt yuv420p `
                    -c:a aac -b:a 160k `

                    "$temp"

                }

          Tdarr is a pretty fun automation tool if you Wana try. Basically I down scale to 1080p if it’s higher, then I rencode to av1 at 8mbps or lower depending on current bitrate. I also keep all audio and subtitle streams how they were

      Surprisingly the server is pretty good on pretty usage. It pulls about 300-350w from the wall, so probably about $50 a month. For being my security system and media server is pretty cost effective
