Windows was eating a lot of ram on my laptop even on idle, so if was planning to upgrade my ram from 16 to 32 gb, then I checked the prices and made the tactical decision to install Linux instead

I was looking into upgrading storage and ended up opting to buy 20TB in HDDs for my NAS.

I have to shuffle Steam games around but at 10Gb, it goes pretty fast (and you can run most games directly off the NAS) and the array can survive if a drive fails (ZFS).

You need the extra hardware to run the NAS but HDDs are a significantly cheaper option and you don’t need SSD speeds for most things.

I feel bad for anyone building now. I built my gaming setup + NAS and server PC and upgraded my Steam Deck in the past 2 to 3 years. Going to get as much milage out of these as I can till things settle down. I’ve changed all my Docker services to lower resource alternatives to keep things running on my existing ram.

Then in 5 years when things have only gotten worse and this is the new norm then I’ll cry alongside everyone else. Or maybe China will get their fabs up and running and swoop in to undercut these bastards to save us all.

yeah I wanted to get more space but I ultimately chose to just upgrade from 16 to 32 GB ram finally. I have a decent amount of storage already, I’m just a blooming data hoarder so I’ve had to fanagle files around

Buy decent memory, and a cheaper SSD. Since the MoBo is backwards compatible you should be able to get a PCI-E 4.0 SSD that won’t cost as much as a 5.0, and when (if) prices finally come down you can upgrade to a better one. Since a DDR4 MoBo isn’t compatible with DDR5 RAM, you’re stuck with DDR4 until you upgrade the MoBo again.
